Reentry Events support our returning citizens

Friday, May 13, 2022

When a citizen returns from incarceration, they need support. Maryland Wellness has been fortunate to partner with so many wonderful organizations at Reentry Events, which help get our community members set up for success by helping them access reliable housing, transportation, new IDs, background friendly jobs (and training), GEDs, expungement services and mental health care!

What Maryland Wellness does is help with all of these activities that might otherwise seem overwhelming, allowing a person to focus on their mental health journey. Even getting an ID, which might seem simple on the surface, can present a great challenge – where do you find your birth certificate, two pieces of mail and your social security card if you’ve just returned home? We can help with these potential barriers or obstacles that could interrupt someone trying to cope with a mental health condition.

Mental illness among those in the system is pervasive with 64 percent of jail inmates, 54 percent of state prisoners and 45 percent of federal prisoners reporting mental health concerns, according to the American Psychological Association. The need for these programs is real – if individuals can feel safe and secure in their lives, they are less likely to go back to the life that led to their incarceration, which has been proven through programs in various states.

“I do nothing but give praise to this establishment. My first time there, I was very nervous, but that quickly changed once I was greeted by the amazing staff in the front office. I can never leave that place with a frown on my face. I would recommend this facility to anybody in need of mental and drug counseling. They are the best I have ever experienced, and that is no lie.”

“When I first started, I was afraid to talk but once they started telling me about this program, I started to open up more. They taught me that I am important; it’s about me today. They have taught me to forget about the past and focus on my goals – my GED,  nursing, helping the homeless, volunteering, etc. This is the most amazing, awesome program in Baltimore, and that’s from my heart. The staff is wonderful, amazing, beautiful, unique and have hearts of gold.”
