Beyond the Classroom: Supporting Children’s Mental Health Throughout the School Year
Tuesday, October 13, 2026
The school year brings opportunities for children to learn, build friendships, and discover new interests. It can also bring challenges that affect their emotional well-being.
Academic expectations, changing routines, peer relationships, and difficulties at home can influence how children feel and function throughout the day.
When those challenges become difficult to manage, additional behavioral health support may help.
Mental Health Is Part of the School Experience
Children don’t always express emotional concerns in obvious ways.
Some may withdraw from activities they previously enjoyed. Others may experience changes in behavior, difficulty concentrating, increased frustration, or challenges connecting with peers.
These experiences don’t always indicate a mental health condition, but persistent concerns may be worth discussing with a qualified professional.
Therapy can provide children with an opportunity to understand their emotions, develop coping strategies, and work through challenges affecting their daily lives.
Connecting Care With the Community
Access to mental health support within schools can make a meaningful difference for students and families.
Through The Personal Wellness Center, a program of Maryland Wellness, school-based behavioral health services are supported by current partnerships in Somerset and Worcester counties on the Eastern Shore.
These partnerships help connect students with behavioral health support in familiar educational settings, recognizing the important relationship between emotional well-being, learning, and everyday life.
Services are provided according to each school’s partnership arrangements and individual student needs.
Support That Extends Beyond School
A child’s mental health needs rarely fit neatly into one setting.
Skills such as communicating feelings, managing stress, solving problems, and navigating relationships can be valuable at school, at home, and in the community.
Depending on their individual needs, children may benefit from outpatient therapy, psychiatric rehabilitation, or other behavioral health services.
Maryland Wellness provides support for children and adolescents across Maryland, with services designed to address individual needs and goals.
Finding the Next Step
Parents, caregivers, educators, and community partners don’t need to have every answer before reaching out.
If a child may benefit from additional behavioral health support, our team can help families explore available services and referral options.
